Burglar Held After Narrow Escape In Front Of Lounge

A would be burglar, trapped by police after a break in at Larry's lounge on 2219 S. Flares. Sgts Tom Farley and Bob Cruz closed the walkway as officers cornered him. Farley fired once. the intruder fled, slipping as a second round tore past his head. Patrolman Kalinoski assisted.

Brackenridge Teacher Wins National Teaching Oscar

Mrs. Minnie Tappan-Cochrane of Brackenridge High School biology wins a national teaching Oscar in a club sponsored contest. She is named second place as teacher of the year at the annual Ashe ville North Carolina meeting. She will receive a week’s holiday in Orlando Florida. She is wife of John P. Cochran past president of the Woman’s club and former Lanier High School teacher.

LANDER Wyo June 6 Secretary of Agriculture Benson declared the present price support program for major crops is too rigid to promote agricultural prosperity and progress. He says this repeats his 1954 argument urging Congress to replace Truman era fixed parity supports with the flexible system offering parity price floors.

A San Antonio man, Allen B. Crow, receives a $19,252 city judgment plus court-ordered interest totaling $917,345 after a decade. Crow alleged he struck a rope across Taylor and Fourth Street at a barricade, breaking his neck in the 10yearold motorcycle accident.

Highway Fund Plan Laid by Texas Highway Dept

Special to The Light Austin June 6 A plan allows the Texas highway department to participate with San Antonio and other cities and counties in acquiring right of way even though funds are insufficient. State participation begins August 22 with HB 60. Budgeted license fee tax boosts won’t flow until next March. The plan lets counties and cities temporarily suspend equal payments for right of way for projects with future reimbursement under HB 62. Details are being provided to district engineers and local officials to arrange interim payments and escrows.

Bexar County Interstate Highway Plans Advanced

Texas highway officials announce a fourth major step in the interstate program. A $150 million advance shifts work from right of way to construction across San Antonio and Bexar County, with plans for U.S. 90 and U.S. 84 routes, grade separations, frontage roads, and multiple county projects totaling about $20.8 million.

State Route Control Repeal Urged by Homeowners League

The Southeast Homeowners League asked Gov. Daniel to call a special session to repeal a house bill granting the Texas highway department power of eminent domain within cities. The group opposes extending U.S. Highway 905 which would cut through Highland Park, and may seek court action if the repeal fails. A hearing before the Texas highway commission and the Bureau of Public Roads is planned.
