Fire Police Bill Delayed by House Amendments

The fire and police pay bill, originated by Sen. Walter Tynan of San Antonio, is delayed about a week as the House adds amendments that do not apply to San Antonio. The measure, passed 92 to 23, would raise minimum base pay from $200 to $720 for San Antonio firemen and policemen, with about a 10 percent overall increase. The bill, now back to the Senate for a vote on amendments, faces possible opposition there. Local option provisions were altered. no local option for cities over 40,000 remains, and San Antonio would require a petition for elections in some city sizes. The bill would require about $180,000 more to meet mandatory minimums, per Ray Davis, San Antonio tax commissioner who opposed it.
