Law officer reviews Strecker case after long hearings
W V Christopherson returned to San Antonio after three weeks in Washington and New Orleans studying the U S versus Joseph George Strecker deportation case. He will report findings to the board of immigration appeals in Washington. The Strecker matter began in 1933 when he was arrested in Hot Springs and recommended for deportation as a Communist Party member. The 1912 act allowed deportation for aliens seeking to overthrow the government by violence. The New Orleans circuit court reversed the original deportation, saying government evidence failed to prove overthrow intent. The Supreme Court required proving continued party membership to arrest. The 1940 amendment broadened deportation to aliens joining organizations to overthrow the government after entering the U S. Hearings May 18–26. the outcome may affect Harry Bridges prosecutions already dismissed.
