Townsend Pension Debate Echoes Through Senate
Washington June 2 A Senate session followed the House in debating a Townsend like old age pension plan or related proposal. The House had defeated the bill to pay up to 200 dollars monthly to elderly persons 308 to 7. Townsend supporters remain undeterred. Senator Downes proposed an amendment to the social security program. Pepper pledged to push higher aid if Townsend fails. Borah urged 60 dollar monthly support as humane and sound. Townsend would start at about 50 dollars monthly for eight million over 60 via a business tax. Dr. Francis E Townsend defended his plan from the gallery. Seventy-seven representatives supported the measure, with California and Florida showing strong backing.
