Drive Against Auto Thieves Targets San Antonio Border Theft

San Antonio authorities launched a drive against auto thieves and car strippers after nine suspects were rounded up overnight. Sergeant Charles E Bartholomar said detectives A. J. Twice and William Carver were assigned to border investigations. Officers estimate 400 cars have been stripped or stolen since January.

16 Year Old Girl Injured by Auto in Crosswalk

Miss Margaret Alcott 16 daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Alcott of 208 Cornell Avenue was struck by an automobile Friday morning while crossing the street. Police report she suffered a broken collarbone and facial bruises. she was taken to Robert B Green Hospital for emergency treatment. Episcopal Diocesan Conference Opens at Gallagher Ranch

The ninth annual Episcopal Diocese of West Texas workers conference began Friday with delegates arriving from missions and parishes. Bishop Capers will preach at 10 AM and Rev. Everett Jones will lead the 7:30 PM service at the Gallagher ranch, with Rev. A R McKinstry directing the event through June 15.

Air Mail to South Increases in May

Downtown post office figures show May air mail to the south rising to 425 pounds 10 ounces from 480 pounds 16 ounces in April. Northern route mail to northern and eastern cities grew to 865 pounds 9 ounces in May from 642 pounds 10 ounces in April.

Vet Pension Gut Opposed by Texas Disabled American Veterans

Disabled American Veterans of Texas announced plans to repeal or modify a new law reducing veterans benefits. Dallas district rehabilitation officer F. Billy Billig said Texas counties lose about 3000 dollars annually under current cuts and many veterans on rolls face heavy reductions. He warned local governments would bear care costs, with about twenty hotel veterans bureau staff laid off as part of the cuts.

Jupiter and Mars Near Earth Tonight

Astronomer Gus A. Duerler Jr. reports Jupiter and Mars will be near Earth Sunday night. The pair will be almost overhead at 8 p.m. with about ten minutes of arc separation, roughly the Moon's apparent diameter. Mars will appear smaller and reddish, south of Jupiter, the brighter planet.

Two Wounded in Ingu Ban Duel In Havana

In Havana the Cubs schedule reports Col Felipe Sanches and Representative Oscar Montalva Jaw wounded in a pistol duel in the senate conference hall after talks on an amnesty bill. Mario Cuellar was imprisoned after surrendering to police as officers seized shells and bonds in a Ve dado building. Witnesses said Cuellar fired three times. Montalvo returned fire twice after being struck with a walking stick.
