Ways and Means Committee keeps current taxes on rails and telephones
Washington July 29 The House Ways and Means Committee considered the 8 billion revenue bill and tentatively decided not to raise the 3 percent tax on passenger and freight rail rates or the tax on telephone messages. It discussed oil pipe line and export rates, noting privately owned pipelines remain untaxed and will be addressed in the new bill. The telephone tax will not rise but the tax provision will extend to exchange services and leased lines. The basis remains 2.10 percent of telephone company compensation from renting lines and exchanges.

Restaurants Not to Blame If Sugar Supply Is Short
F R Farman of the local food administration says cooperation between customers and restaurants is patriotic under new sugar rules. Restaurants can no longer exceed two pounds per person per month, with August sugar based on July meals. If a patron gets less, it is due to a genuine shortage, not restaurant withholding.
