The bar’s license suspension and a 9:30 a.m. hearing are noted, with court scheduling influencing the new 9 a.m. meeting hour of the Commissioners court.

Congress Poised to Sideline Tidelands Bill Amid Oil Clash

Washington July 23 Congress appeared ready to drop the politically explosive tidelands bill on President Truman’s desk. The measure would extend state ownership of oil resources three miles into the ocean, a long running dispute involving Edwin W. Pauley and former Interior Secretary Ickes. The Senate approved it 44 to 34 despite Democratic opposition and sent it back to the House for early agreement on final form. Barkley urged a veto, hoping to punish Pauley, while Ickes benefits from the clash. Pauley denies propounding oil campaign funding, while the bill’s fate hinges on presidential action and defense interests.
