Paris notes mark one year since the Austrian ultimatum to Serbia, with French papers pledging unwavering wartime resolve and rhetoric on German aims. In Austin, Texas the Comptroller’s Department certifies a new state tax rate of five cents assessed value for property, plus a 20 cent ad valorem and a five cent Confederate pension tax.
Abstracters from across the state are expected for the Noxag Abstractors Association annual meeting in Corpus Christi August 4 to 8. Baldwin of Guaranty Title chairs local arrangements and a mailed personal invitation radius targets every member. The chamber of commerce launches distinctive advertising inviting attendance with four photo cards mailed to two hundred members.
Corpus Christi Texas July 23. Twenty five hundred bales of cotton just opened were shipped to New York for boutonnieres and table decoration for the National Decorators association banquet at the Waldorf Astoria July 28. The cotton from Refca county farms was gathered and sent by the local Chamber of Commerce as decor.
The Bettis government through Sir Edward Grey expressed regret to Norway for British warships violating Norwegian territorial waters by seizing a German steamer inside the three mile limit. The note asks the Admiralty to respect Norwegian waters in future and calls for German satisfaction for torpedoing Norwegian ships and loss of lives.
Over two months 6650 jack rabbits were killed across Tom Green Young and Coke counties, triggering a bounty of b cents per scalp shared by the county and state. Comptroller reports show 1122 rabbits in Tom Green 765 in Young and 478 in Coke with state payouts totaling 526.24 plus 64 quails and 328 in the same period.
W H Richardson Jr of Austin Rotary Club was elected Rotary director for the Texas and Louisiana jurisdiction. He attends the annual Rotarians convention in San Francisco as part of a gathering of about two thousand Rotarians.
Anchorage's government engineers begin building a model town after 1178 lots were offered and 635 sold for 147.25 dollars total. A second sale will occur next month under the U S land office. J A Moore serves as town manager and mayor with strict building and sanitation rules. The commission directs construction of the government railroad linking Seward to Fairbanks.
President Wilson cancels today’s cabinet meeting due to lack of pressing business after meeting most of the secretaries individually in recent days. Captain Arthur A. Stiles, state reclamation engineer, inspects Clemens Levees farm projects with Governor Ferguson observing.
The city outlines park police reorganization with Mrs. C L Graham and Miss Vinnie Spangler named police women. Long-serving officers John Finhenry Tom Mock and Buck Gravis to receive park posts at Brackenridge and other parks. Commission Steves notes no pension plan, believes veterans deserve continued service, cites 42 years for Fitzhenry and 18 years for Gravis.
San Antonio music lovers will hear Carl Sehlegel, Metropolitan Opera Company baritone, in a Friday night concert at the Monger. He is assisted by Edna Polhemus, soprano, and John M. Steinfeldt, pianist, with a varied program of Schubert, Hiller, Strauss, and other European arias and songs.
Austin city council approves a jitney licensing ordinance setting a license fee of 32, effective August 2, with driver licensing and stipulations continuing to govern the jitney regulation act. The broader regulatory ordinance takes effect ten days later, with conditions on license granting.
Members of the Elwood Fishing and Gun Club bound for the San Francisco exposition rode a special train to San Antonio and will share their westward journey Friday night. They visited two days in San Antonio with Indiana Society members hosting a reception at the St. Anthony Hotel.
A new ailment named endarteritis obliterans has appeared in New York and surrounding areas. Doctors say it is often mistaken for rheumatism or gout and may have originated from Tulsi Poland and parts of Austria. The disease causes swelling and pain, with treatment including salt solution injections.
John Temple Graves, noted historian and orator, will address the Corpus Christi Chautauqua on August 28 marked as former’s day. The program notes his topics will cover social and political questions of national interest. Also announced is a Gadski concert in August and a Grove’s Tonic ad appears in the notice.
