Prison escape ends in deputy murder and manhunt
Three inmates attempting an escape shot and killed Deputy Sheriff R. L. Shipp and seriously wounded Officer Gale McMullen near the state prison in Huntsville. The trio grabbed Shipp's revolver, fired from a car, and were captured after a stop outside the prison. Shipp served six years with the Walker County force and leaves a wife and two children. The suspects Pettit Behnke and Adair were held without bond on murder charges.
