Alexander's Ragtime Band joins the Eighth Illinois Infantry in San Antonio
The Eighth Illinois Infantry baton of Colonel Franklyn A. Dennison welcomes Alexander's Ragtime Band. The ensemble, a negro regiment, is praised as the most accurate martial band in the north though some members were trimmed by the medical board for size or weight. Musicians funded their own instruments and many work in Chicago theaters. Descriptions capture lively performances after retreat with hymns and ragtime favorites.
