Eleanor's White House ad campaign flops in Latin ties
Westbrook Pegler reports on a 1940 campaign by the Buchanan Advertising agency using Mary Hopkins' son David to push Eleanor Roosevelt as a Pan American coffee radio attraction paying $1000 weekly. The effort drew scrutiny from Latin American coffee interests and U.S. committees, with alleged misdirection of funds as charitable payments and ties to public charities. Details reference the Dies Committee findings, Betty Lindley connections, and questions over the campaign's legality and independence of Mrs. Roosevelt.
