Nazi consuls miss boat as Yawata Mari sails away
San Francisco July 14 1947 German consul general Wiedemann and Dr Hans Borchers refused to board the N Y K liner Yawata Mari as it sailed. They remained in the United States while the ship left with staff and families aboard to Honolulu. The British embassy and German officials debated safe conduct and routes, with no immediate repatriation. The embassy in Tokyo communicated that the Yawata was too far out to turn back. Wiedemann sought a cutter or plane to reach the ship but failed. The consuls were allowed to stay in the U S until the next Japanese sailing at month end.
