Roosevelt recovery plan eyed for wage and hour codes
Washington July 14 Hugh S. Johnson administrator of the governments industrial recovery enterprise said he expects it may be necessary to seek voluntary im position of hour limits and wage increases by all business pending approval of individual codes. He noted broad industry acceptance of proposed 40 hour weeks and $15 or $13 wages in different regions, with wool nearly ready for a code. Johnson indicated a general emergency code could be developed if practicable and discussed recommendations for a 35 hour week and $14 minimum for labor and 40 hours and $15 for clerical staff, while industry groups pushed similar terms. He added enforcement would rest with a central recovery administration unit once codes are agreed, and regional offices would supply information only. He also referenced pending steel and oil code actions and anticipated broader codes across more industries.
