New Patman Bonus Bill Entered In Congress
Washington July 13. A new Patman bill calls for immediate bonus payments to veterans in need. Rep Patman of Texas drafted it, modeled on a California veterans march petition, with an estimated cost near a billion dollars. Veterans Bureau would set eligibility rules. California marchers, led by Roy W. Robertson, camped near the Capitol lawn, but authorities allowed sleeping on the grass. Despite looming adjournment, most marchers awaited relief and possible transportation or food allowances. The encampment drew only a few hundred of the planned marchers, as clerks waited for action and many veterans said they were there to observe. There was no clear plan to enter the Capitol grounds.
