House Rejects Raw Officer Reduction in War Dept Bill
Washington July 1 Proposal to cut regular army officers faced sharp House opposition. The House adopted a Senate amendment to the war department appropriation reducing officers to 1,000 after Sept 1 and preserving higher pay for retirees. Barbour and allies opposed cuts calling it false economy. New York Republicans defected. An amendment limited government clothing manufacture and banned private auto use with public funds. If Senate approves, the bill heads to President Hoover. Total war department outlay set at 306 million for the fiscal year 1939.
