Timber supply of South in danger

Asheville N C July 11 Fire and waste threaten the timber supply of the south. Henry S Graves chief forester of the United States declared today in an address before the Southern Forestry Congress which began a four days session here. He urged more states to fund forest fire prevention under the Weeks law in cooperation with the national government. He said once the fire problem is controlled forestry in the south holds almost unlimited possibilities. He noted sixty one percent of the country s hard wood supply is in the south with the Appalachian region as the main remaining source. At current cutting rates the hardwood timber supply would not last many years. Proper methods could grow four fifths of the country s hardwood needs in the south. Southern pine is the principal softwood used in two thirds of the country east of the plains. With 325 billion feet of yellow pine and 20 000 saw mills the pine industry dominates the timber market. The pine region furnishes about 35 000 000 dollars of turpentine and resin annually, income now at risk without proper forest care.
