The Y M C A seeks amateur sportsmen to serve as recreational secretaries for overseas work. Italian Court Probes Plot To Blow Up Brindisi Battleship
Rome July 10 three Italian sailors and a soldier face court martial for blowing up the Italian battleship Benedetto Brin on September 27 1916 by placing an infernal machine in the gun room. The vessel exploded in Brindisi harbor killing over 100 including Rear Admiral Rubin de Cervin. An Italian inquiry tied the destruction to German agents and 40 were arrested. An Italian named Ambroghetti linked to the Brindisi and Leonardo da Vinci losses said he was the financier for Monsignor Gerlach. Gerlach fled Italy and was later found guilty of espionage and sentenced to imprisonment for life.
