WLB Moves To End Two Labor Controversies In War Era

The labor board acted Saturday to resolve two major disputes. The Midwest truck drivers strike, set to start at midnight, was postponed pending a key hearing in Washington. Meanwhile 8,000 Timken plant workers in Canton, Ohio, remained idle as the board urged the United Steel Workers Union to end a stoppage affecting war materials. More than 7,000 other workers were idle in about 40 disputes, including 6,500 in Pennsylvania amid walkouts over grievances. The board ordered wage increases and directed the Midwest Operators association to justify noncompliance by July 6 while some companies had already met the wage directives.
