Washington Artillery Letter Reflects Civil War Siege
A city resident and former Washington artillery member recounts the Civil War clash at Fredericksburg and Stone's River. He details how four New Orleans companies carried sixteen guns, the delays from rifle fire, the thin Confederate line, and a near rout as Union columns overwhelmed the position. The letter emphasizes rapid retreat after horses were shot and a disciplined pullback under fire.
