Poll Tax Debate Highlights Racial Voting Gaps in Texas
Don Politico argues over abolishing the poll tax, noting its continuing effect on Mexican and Black voters in Bexar County. Census data show 231000 residents with 190000 Anglo, 82000 Mexican, and 10000 Black, while poll-tax holders in 1940 numbered 49000 Anglo, 10600 Mexican, and 4000 Black. Around 90 percent of Mexican voters and 70 percent of Black voters participate compared to 40 percent of Anglo-Americans, influencing political power and party deference. The piece questions the tax’s purpose and its future alongside a curious aside about Swiss places.
