Beatty Lions Trainer Describes Sammy the Killer Lion
Cleveland January 30. Clyde Beatty says there was no bullet in Sammy the lions gun or the death of Byssie the lioness would have made Sammy a killer. Beatty reveals he has a squad of four lions including Leo and King and two brothers to maintain order after a dangerous training period. Sammy killed Byssie during practice, and Beatty ordered removal of her carcass and forced Sammy to perform to prove who was boss. Leo and King then faced Sammy in the cage, leading to a merry bending of authority. Sammy remained in the show amid the tension and a chair was knocked from Beatty’s hands in the act.
