Treasury borrowing power near exhaustion sparks debt limit push
Secretary Morgenthau warned the treasury will exhaust its borrowing authority in four months and urged raising the debt limit from 249 billion to 65.5 billion. He testified before the House Ways and Means Committee that the plan includes selling securities attractive to all investors and issuing small denomination bonds and savings certificates to fund national defense. He noted combined borrowing authority would last only four months, with June 30, 1942, as the likely end date, and said 85 billion would cover the defense needs.
