At IXth Army times, an Allied spokes man declined to confirm a New York radio report that the Allied high command has established direct contact with Marshal Stalin. If confirmed, coordination could align Soviet drives with Western efforts. Germany moved most air power east, with 7,600 planes now in the eastern theater, while supply lines are believed to be less than half of those in April.

Slush fund claim over $50,000 for gambling machines
In Austin on January 26 a charge that at least $50,000 had been raised in San Antonio and Texas for a slush fund supporting gambling interests was raised by Col. Ramner Garrison director of the Department of Public Safety. He noted private information suggesting the money could be more or less than this amount and discussed difficulties in proving embezzlement. He cited a pattern where promoters collect funds to take heat from authorities, then solicit more from others. He added prosecutions are rare as proof is hard and noted tax data placing slot machine taxation at low levels.
