Nigerian relief efforts praised amid refugee strain in Nigeria
Maj Gen Gowon praised relief work as a British official and Nigerian officials reported progress in feeding and treating refugees in Aba and surrounding areas. A UN official said some hospital staff fled into the bush during violence but overall aid distribution was improving with doctors and nurses aiding the ill and injured. British secretary Maurice Foley stated food and medical aid were less acute than feared, while stressing transportation and delivery as key challenges.
