Secret talks hint at Readmission of United Mine Workers
After an eight year split John L. Lewis and William Green met in Washington on an off the record basis to discuss readmitting the United Mine Workers to the AFL-CIO. A plan to ballot on a war department back to work proposal raised hopes for a quick settlement of a strike involving 6000 workers in Washington and Oregon foundries. Private contractors in Philadelphia threatened a mass garbage pickup disruption amid a city strike. Retirement of a one day walkout at the Bayonne refinery followed seniority based promotions demands. The National Labor Relations Board upheld an election at a San Antonio plant deciding union representation by the Iron Workers shop local No 683.
