Soldiers Solve Caddy Problem at San Francisco Open
In San Francisco on January 18 the Open golf tournament fixed caddy fees at 54 cents per round but shortages left many caddies serving in uniform. Soldiers near Harding Park worked as caddies during liberty hours, aiding the event amid war-driven telecommunication cuts. The San Francisco Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored the tournament, securing borrowed phone lines and even truck farm facilities for the four day event. The tournament showed a profit, with expenses cleared by day two and profits on the final days. Ed Dudley noted plans for more Open tournaments including Phoenix and San Antonio, with potential events in New Orleans and North Carolina. The Athletic Round Table of Spokane has bid $15,000 for a major tournament.
