Eisenhower bans mass protests against demobilization
Washington Jan 17 General Eisenhower told Congress he has banned further GI mass meetings protesting the demobilization slowdown. He said protests should be passed upward to the high command while officers at posts monitor the order’s implementation. He opened a channel for enlisted men and junior officers to state why they are or aren’t essential and noted a gap between issuing the order and its execution. He cited a MacArthur letter arguing rapid return of troops could weaken Korea and Japan control and affect surplus property rollup. Eisenhower to discuss the demobilization plan on CES Friday at 8 p.m. CST.
