Drive to have 5 per cent of pay pledged for defense bonds
A plan to have every employee in Bexar county pledge at least five percent of wages for defense bonds and stamps will be launched at a Merchants Association meeting in San Antonio. G B Freeman, chairman of the Bexar County Committee for Sale of Defense Bonds and Stamps, said employers will be asked to secure pledges from their workers. The meeting will also outline steps to speed up stamp sales and inform merchants of changes in government investment handling. Freeman cited a Treasury official’s remark that retailers should aim to sell one billion dollars in stamps and bonds, equating to about 11 percent of annual U.S. oil-store sales, and warned taxes could rise if the program fails. The group’s organizing setup will be updated at the 3 p.m. gathering, with members listed.
