The Brighter Side by Damon Runyon in 1940 satire
A humorous 1940s Runyon column mocks genealogical pitches from the American Research Bureau. The narrator, wary of family histories sold to collectors, recalls a corner chat with Major Alvin McAleenan about “double nothing” on histories and preserves a light, wry tone about Runyon kin and frontier social foibles. The piece parodies dice games and social climbing in Trail City with ironic tales of great-uncle Ted, coin and dice mishaps, and the clash between lineage pride and practical vanity.
