Plans Quietly Form for Social Security Reexamination
On Capitol Hill Avccimen and Preve Plans moved toward a full reexamination of the social security program as Congress reopens. Chairman Boughton of the Ways and Means Committee plans a study of revising the system but avoids direct clash with President Truman over unemployment benefits. Truman urged action from the committee to shelve and pass proposals for federal supplements up to 25 dollars weekly for 26 weeks, a move the committee voted to postpone indefinitely. Senator McClellan raised concern about approving British loans now, warning it could set an awkward precedent with Russia and suggesting broad foreign loan requests may total 20 to 30 billion dollars.

Also cited was Japan’s postwar jobless toll of 3.25 million, including 1.486 million women.
