Maverick Proposes Government Aided Private Housing Plan
Washington January 4 1942 Representative Maury Maverick Democrat Texas proposed a government aided private building program to construct about one million homes yearly using prefabricated materials. He argued 3 million men could gain work and that homes could cost 1000 to 1500 dollars with private financing and savings institutions handling loans at favorable terms. He suggested private lenders set maximum net returns near 4 to 12 percent compared with FHA rates, with monthly payments around 6 to 90 dollars.
