Banks prepare for FDIC insured deposits rollout
More than 25 million in bank deposits were backed by insurance as the new federal deposit insurance corporation began operations. Membership is mandatory for national banks and Federal Reserve banks, with local banks already contributing a quarter of one percent of deposits. Insurance will expand gradually to cover all accounts up to 50 000, with phased increases through June. Officials say federal approval of banks applying for FDIC membership will come from Washington soon.
