S A Asks Center Aid for Emergency Shelter for Pits
SA asks center aid as AACOG considers funds for an emergency shelter and crisis center to serve the San Antonio area. Rita Schonhoff says a $125000 grant from the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration would partly fund the project with about $50000 likely to SA. The YWCA, based in New York, has reviewed several sites. The group plans to rent rather than build initially and pursue local funding. A controversial San Antonio Ranch New Town project was defeated 8 to 3 amid objections from the San Antonio River Authority and Edwards Underground Authority about potential pollution of the drinking water. The water board and river feasibility officials emphasized protection of the Edwards Aquifer. AACOG also discussed twice-line river study participation and education program support with local planning meetings planned.
