The Texas House approved a bill to bring insurance securities under state Insurance Commission regulation by a 103 to 35 vote and sent it to the Senate. The measure requires registration of stocks with full disclosure and aims to protect the public, drawing opposition from promoters.
Former Costa Rican President Rafael Angel Calderon Guardia is back in Mexico reportedly suffering from malaria after an abortive revolt in Costa Rica last month.
In Austin on February 17 AP reports leaders discuss uniting factions led by Governor Shivers and national Democratic chair Butler. McKelvey voiced hope for common ground between Shivers supporters and the national committee to back a 1956 presidential candidate and possible Texas representation on the national slate.
St Louis February 17 The UN security council did not recognize Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr as a native American envoy. The national committee urges a cease fire in Formosa while the United States works with allies and studies advisory talks. Texans backing Stevenson in 1952 form an advisory group assisting U S policy. There is no direct contact with the Texas committee.
LAREDO Feb 16 An instructor and student pilot from Laredo AFB were killed Tuesday night when their T 33 jet crashed near the city Base officials identified the instructor as 2nd Lt Leon Taylor of Shreveport La and the student pilot as 2nd Lt Raoul Dossman of San Antonio Texas Both men were from the Laredo Air Force Base.
The civil service commission studied the dismissal of Patrolman John J. Cortez for allegedly pistol whipping a drinking companion during a Dec. 20 incident at El Alazan cafe. Witnesses Beltran and bartender Garcia gave conflicting accounts. Beltran was treated with 50 stitches. No verdict date was set as the commission adjourned. Cortez is suspended and Beltran has filed aggravated assault charges.
