Three armed men robbed the Shepherd Park Mamillan National Bank branch in suburban Washington today, fleeing with an estimated 30 000 to 40 000 dollars. Maryland state police were alerted to pursue the bandits.
New York City faces a wartime blackout of Broadway and the New York Clearing District as coal shortages trigger drastic restrictions. Beginning Sunday electric advertising will be cut and most public lighting dimmed to conserve coal, with officials enforcing strict rationing measures across the city.
In Rome on February 17 Ingrid Burgman and Rossellini led a villa Margherita clinic departure after reporters and photographers crowded the dawn vigil at the birth of a baby on February 2. The nurse refused portraiture delaying departure.

Property and livestock damage reported heavy while weather cooled and skies cleared in the region. Subzero readings limited to Wisconsin and Minnesota with bitter air moving toward Canada.
The Western Parade kicked off the city’s first annual Livestock Exposition with thousands of horses, buggies, and band members marching downtown. The event opened at 3 p.m. Friday at the county coliseum, with dignitaries and officials leading the parade. Notable participants included Governor and parade marshals, Miss San Antonio, and various rodeo figures.
In Budapest the Hungarian Communist Government opened the espionage and sabotage trial of Robert A. Vogeler and six others as Edgar Sanders, ITT executive, admitted he worked for the U S Army. Other defendants Imre Geiger and Zoltan Rada echoed pleas claiming they were forced to spy. The trial adjourned without Vogeler being heard.
Washington February 17 1946 government leaders aimed for a settlement by Monday of the coal strike. About 370 000 miners had returned to work under a court order as 41 000 jobless were added by new layoffs. A secret three hour meeting reportedly broadened wage and contract talks amid possible federal action. Four non union miners were wounded in gunfire in West Virginia during the strike era.
In New York on February 17 Archibald Palmer was dismissed today as attorney for Judith Coplon. The court, acting on Coplon’s request, appointed three new lawyers to defend the former government employee on espionage charges before Federal Judge Sylvester Ryan.
DETROIT February 17 The first hopeful note in the 23 day Chrysler strike sounded as company and union agreed to step up negotiations.
NEW YORK February 17 The February 24 strike deadline for the nation s telephone system drew nearer today as new agreements surfaced on major fronts with tentative progress reported by union and management negotiators.
Joseph J. Barshop a San Antonio fruit importer convicted on five counts of income tax evasion faces a new trial motion filed in federal court by attorney Dan Moody. Judge Ben River will hear the motion Friday with sentencing set for 10 am Saturday barring denial. Barshop could be released on bond pending appeal in 10 days, facing a potential maximum five years and a $10 000 fine or both. Also to be sentenced Saturday is George H. Geyer 44 convicted of seven counts of violating the federal narcotics act.
In Kankakee Illinois on February 11, students enjoyed a day without school after Lincoln's birthday was observed and closures followed by a sleet storm. A fire later damaged the local school building causing about 15000 dollars in damage and leaving bells silent.
Cleveland report notes the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and Order of Railway Conductors announced a nationwide strike set for February 27 per the Trainmen's News. Also, Hollywood reports comedian Jack Carson and Kay S. Gertain reached a property agreement and custody arrangement. divorce filing anticipated soon.
The forecast predicts a southerly breeze, clear to partly cloudy skies and spring like temperatures. Saturday morning should see a low near 46 degrees with afternoon highs around 74. Friday’s high is expected to near 72 as conditions ease into clear skies.
Three persons pleaded guilty Friday in County Court at Lay No 1 and were sentenced by Judge McCollum Burnett. George Lee Coleman, county doll, received a $25 fine and four months in jail for aggravated assault on Jugia Crawford. Wayman Rodgers, city jail, jailed for the same offense. G War Harris, 840 Portest, plumbing without a license, fined $25.
Detroit report states Mrs. Glara Bryant Ward widow of Henry Ford, 39, showed slight improvement today at Henry Ford Hospital where she is being treated for a heart condition. Earlier reports had her critically ill.
CORPUS CHRISTI Feb 17 The navy cancelled its air search for nine men last heard from a PRM flying boat over the Gulf of Mexico near Galveston a week ago today Critics claimed the effort would continue by a guard patrol along the coast for several days as night fell
Texans enjoyed milder Friday as warm gusts eased, with Panhandle and West Texas seeing cooler overnight readings. Forecasters expect the trend to continue into Saturday, though some areas reported temperatures roughly ten degrees higher than the previous night.
State Highway Patrolmen arrested four San Antonio youths early Friday two miles south of New Braunfels after a chase. They admitted stealing two cars in San Antonio and were identified by licenses. One gun and shells found in an automobile. Youths named Lackey Alexander Harvey Thurmond and others were taken to San Antonio via New Braunfels deputies.
