Draft boards ordered to review 1.7 million farm deferments
Federal officials ordered local draft boards to rapidly reclassify farm workers and end deferments for those not meeting new production units. The plan links farm work to war needs, with a complex scale of units based on crops and livestock. Hershey denied raising the draft age and declined estimates on how many farmers would be drafted under the new rules.
