Truman Backs Pauley Nomination for Navy Undersecretary
Washington dispatch reports President Truman said he will not withdraw Edwin W. Pauley’s nomination as navy undersecretary. He defended Pauley as honest and capable, citing his work as Reparations administrator, and noted Ickes may be mistaken. Pauley reportedly told Ickes he could raise $300,000 for Democratic campaign funds from California airmen if assured the government would not file suit on tidelands reserves. Senate Republicans questioned George E. Alten, adviser to Truman and Pauley. Hearing delays followed Democratic pressure to postpone further naval committee sessions until next week. A U.S. move to suspend war-time commercial relations with Italy was anticipated.
