Police Unit To Assume Airport Duty
The San Antonio Police Department prepares to take over security at International Airport on Tuesday. A squad of 19 patrolmen will screen departing passengers, a task formerly done by federal agents, at an anticipated cost above 419,500 monthly. Two-way radios worth 6,000 were purchased for officer use. The force is short handed due to added duties in annexed areas, with February academy graduates expected to fill gaps. Officials seek federal funding to train airport specialists, while security personnel operate under sheriff's commissions and are paid by the police department.
