Delay Until After 72 Vote Is Aim
Texas Attorney General Crawford Martin planned to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the Dallas and San Antonio single member state house districts until the state’s full appeal is considered. Assistant AG Sam McDaniel would file in Washington, arguing three months and five days remain before primaries and candidate filing deadline is next Monday. The motion contends the plan contains census errors and noncontiguous districts, while a three judge Austin court found multi member districts discriminated against Dallas blacks and San Antonio Hispanics.

Impossible plan to redraw precincts before May election
Bexar County Tax Assessor Charles Davis filed an affidavit with the state attorney general arguing it is impossible to redraw voting precincts prior to the May 6 prime Tiles. He said many precincts have been split to create new single member districts and noted 224,000 voter registration certificates have been issued under the current plan. Davis predicted about 300,000 registrations for 1972 elections and warned of substantial costs to reissue certificates and relabel precinct numbers.
