Laborers worn out by excessive toil

Washington December 31 laborers forced to twelve hour days are worn out faster than slaves and deprived of common pleasures more than many prisoners. Dr Basil M Manly testified to the American Association for Labor Legislation that twelve hour workers are numerous in iron and steel and many other industries. He said these workers are almost slaves to the machine and have little time for family. S Thurston Ballard argued eight hours suffice for strenuous work. Justin B Garretson condemned long railroad hours.
