In Hilo Hawaii on December 27 US Army engineers and 12 bombing planes prepared to attack lava from Mauna Loa. They aimed to break a lava channel 9 miles from the city with 600 pound bombs and TNT charges to shield the water supply and prevent a dangerous advance toward the ocean.
Fire and Police Commissioner Sirr Wright announced a campaign with the city government and chamber of commerce to establish a district weather office in San Antonio. He urged ending dependence on the New Orleans forecast hub and noted current readings are sent to Louisville for Texas forecasts.
