Summit To Probe Rationing Amid Energy Crisis
President Nixon met with energy chief William Simon to discuss new ways to handle a severe energy shortage, including possible gas rationing. Kuwait’s oil ministers pledged 10 percent January increases to meet Japan Britain France and other needs if supplies do not leak abroad. Simon suggested voluntary conservation might suffice, with proposals to force carpooling or random road bans, and a standby rationing plan ready if supply dips to a crisis level. Federal plans reportedly include local rationing boards Falcon coupons and prioritized fuel access, plus crude allocation nationwide. Diplomatic circles noted a shift toward easing Western pressure from Arab producers amid ongoing Middle East tensions.
