Gunmen Fire On Belfast Home Weakened By Warning
Gunmen armed with automatic weapons burst into a Catholic Belfast home early Saturday. An American woman, Ann McConnell of Cleveland, Ohio, and her six year old daughter Anne Marie escaped injury as bullets splintered the bed headboard. The family had visited to see her widowed father Patrick Gormley on Alliance Road. The spokesman said it was an assassination attempt, possibly a wrong house. The incident occurred during Christmas truce events with bombings and gunfire elsewhere in Belfast and Londonderry.

Gaza refugee camps to be rebuilt under Israeli plan
United Press International reports Israel ordered 105 Palestinian families from refugee camps in the Gaza Strip to vacate. Rafah and other camps will be redesigned with roads cutting through to create rectangular sections. Only refugees making a 240 dollar down payment and a 1120 dollar mortgage may move into new houses. Israeli official Gazit says the plan will ease crowding and deter guerrilla activity while costing about 60,000 dollars per new home. Syria and Turkey call for Israeli withdrawal as a precondition for Middle East peace.
