Miller Sworn In as UMWA Chief Ends One Man Rule

Arnold R. Miller, 49, a coal miner disabled by black lung, is sworn in as president of the United Mine Workers of America. He pledges to end autocratic rule and says miners will know this is their union. The ceremony at union HQ in Charleston follows a court-ordered election nullifying incumbent Bayliss. More than 300 rank-and-file members attend as a band plays and a carnival atmosphere surrounds the oath.
