Congress weighs emergency WPA funding to extend relief
Washington December 22. Senate and House leaders plan to confer soon with President Roosevelt on an emergency appropriation for the WPA as the agency warns it will run out of money by February. John L. Lewis says 1.009 billion dollars may be required through July 1. Estimates range up to 750 million and 900 million. Aubrey Williams says funds must be approved before January 6 to avoid immediate roll cuts and a shutdown in 32 days. WPA expenditures from December 1 to 19 totaled 133,138,066. Debate centers on need versus political opposition to a lump sum allotment. Representative Woodruff notes some lawmakers will oppose a large emergency grant.
