Democrats Try to Seize More Committee Positions
Washington Dec 21 Democratic leaders proposed that the party take over more committee posts to draft legislation, a move met with Republican protest. Representative Burns of Tennessee, a Democratic Floor leader, argued Democrats hold about one fourth of the House seats and should share about one third of committee posts. Representative Mapes of Michigan, a Republican, opposed the shift. The House rules show 922 Democrats and 102 Republicans in the next session, with committee balance unchanged since Democrats took control in 1931.
