In Columbia Tennessee on December 18 a 20 year old Black man named Cold Cheek was lynched near Glendale after an alleged failed assault on an 11 year old girl. The grand jury declined to indict. Sheriff Godwin said bullets marks were found on the body, which was hanged from a tree after an anonymous tip. The girl identified Cheek as the assailant, and he had been released in Nashville for safekeeping prior to the lynching.
The Danish steamer Lars Kruse rescued eight of Ellen T Marshall’s crew after the schooner caught fire about one hundred miles southeast of Cape Sable Nova Scotia.
