Welfare Work Mandate for Recipients in Major Overhaul
Senate Finance Committee and conferees pushed a Nixon era welfare reform plan requiring able bodied recipients to work or attend training. The measure, backed by Sen. Herman Tainvadge, would extend a guaranteed annual income to some but excludes under six year olds and certain caregivers. It would affect about 2 million recipients and aims to overhaul Aid to Dependent Children while preserving health and education welfare programs.
