Speculation Probe News in Senate Committee

Washington December 13 The senate appropriations committee promised an early decision on a full scale probe of commodity market speculation by government officials. It will hear from Eawin W Pauley special assistant to the army secretary who has disclosed himself as a million dollar class speculator. Bridges said the next appearance by Pauley is not fixed and checks are under way in state treasury and agriculture departments. The committee seeks responses from commerce and national defense. Pauley testified there were no improprieties in his trading.

Services Held For War Dead Mrs Bettie Holcomb Gray

Funeral services were held Friday at Cherokee for Bettie Holcomb Gray of Cherokee who died Thursday. Her husband Oscar F. Gray, a member of a long-established local ranching family, survives with widow er, daughter Bess Sittard, brother Charles Holcomb of Cherokee, brothers Bob Holcomb of Richland Springs and Shelton Holcomb of south Texas, plus a grandson and granddaughter.

Air Reserves To Dance At Field Brooks Field

Courthouse budget to gain $74,000 in 1948

Courthouse offices will receive an additional budgetary translation of $74,000 in 1948, after county commissioners conferred with County Auditor Edgar Garvey. The panel aimed to meet most officeholders' requests, trimming about $76,000 from the 1947 total of $2,125,560 while excluding the Assessor-Collector’s wage boost.

County budget talks reveal 360000 surplus projected

After several conferences the commissioners found the county should have an estimated surplus of 360000 at end of the fiscal year, Dec. 31. Garvey had not allocated 14000 of the estimated county income based on a 2040000000 assessment for 1948, and the board would cover the gap from budget requests.

Doctor F A Allen reported a heavy gold ring valued at 1000 dollars set with five diamonds disappeared during an operation at M and S hospital. He had attempted to secure the ring to his gown and forgot it, later finding it missing.

Police hunt husband in murder near El Paso

San Antonio police and FBI agents hunted Manuel C. Chavez, 21, wanted for questioning in the murder Thursday of his wife and mother in Chamberino, New Mexico, near El Paso. He was last seen in El Paso and believed heading toward San Antonio to reach relatives and friends.
