Milan dispatch reports a French warship escorting 41 German midget prisoners of war home from the New York World’s Fair. The women in the troupe were allowed to proceed.
Finnish Nobel candidate Frans Beinil Sillanpea crossed into Sweden at Hiparanda on his way to Stockholm to receive his prize. The 56 year old writer traveled with his family, and coverage notes the prize’s value once awarded to prior laureates.

Charles H. Walgreen founder of a vast drug store empire died last night at 66 after rising from an $18 a week clerk to head a chain of nearly 500 stores in 39 states with annual sales around 50 million dollars. He left the presidency last summer due to ill health and was elected chairman. his son CH. Walgreen II became president. Private funeral services will be held in Dixon, Illinois, with his widow and daughter Mrs. John W. Stephan among survivors.
A Washington canvass across embassies shows many Americans volunteering to join British, French, German, Finnish, and Polish forces. Officials cite 1917 statute banning service with foreign powers and warn penalties include prison and loss of citizenship.
